Through the lens of a Gainesville Florida aesthetic, Baby J’s was designed to capture the intimacy of a small jazz club/audiophile lounge with the glamour of the Art Deco movement and casualness of European-style cafes. Chinotto House created a space that pays homage to the history of the building while bringing it into the present: keeping the original terrazzo floors and imperfect existing walls but adding bold touches like the 14’ tall back bar fully clad in metallic gold bricks, arches painted International Yves Klein Blue, and custom-made bright yellow channel tufted banquettes. The lighting program is a particularly invigorating one with Tom Dixon Melt sconces, arched Muller Van Severen lights, backlit Bower Melt Mirrors, classic crystal chandeliers and brass table lamps built into the curved herringbone white oak bar top.
The bathroom is a fully immersive experience with its own hip hop playlist, fluted wood paneling lining the walls and ceiling, a custom mirror spanning two walls mimicking the arch shapes seen in the dining room, and a floating peach concrete sink.
